Sexuality & Occupational Therapy
How we began |
Sexuality and occupational therapy was born out of a need witnessed by Dr Breanne. Specifically a need for patients to have someone to address sexuality with and a lack of occupational therapists addressing sexuality. In her undergraduate education, she saw from a friend with a sister with developmental delay the difficulties of families looking for places to teach sexuality. As a practitioner in many settings throughout her career, Dr Breanne saw patients who wanted to discuss sexuality issues, but didn't know who to ask. She even witnessed some occupational therapy practitioners refuse to treat the subject even when brought up by patients. Understanding the importance of sexuality to a person's well-being, Dr Breanne decided she would find a way to bridge this gap between what patients needed and wanted and what occupational therapy practitioners were not providing. In the process of bridging this gap, Sexuality and Occupational Therapy was born.
